
The women's basketball team fell just short of a victory on Wednesday, falling 62-59 to visiting Trine University. Kalamazoo trailed by as many as 14 points (32-18) late in the first half, but cut the deficit to seven (23-25) at the break. The Hornets chipped away in the second half, eventually taking a 50-49 lead with 7:18 to play. Trine pulled ahead again and led by seven (59-52) with 2:06 left. The Hornets rallied and trailed by just two (59-57) with 1:03 remaining. Trine made a pair of free throws to take a four-point lead followed by a missed three-pointer and a pair of missed free throws by Kalamazoo. The Hornets regained possession and scored to make it 61-59 with four seconds remaining. Trine made one-of-two free throws with one second on the clock, allowing Kalamazoo a three-quarter court shot that came up short as time expired. Kalamazoo shot 40.4 percent to Trine's 36.2 percent. The Hornets also held a 43-28 advantage in rebounding, but turned the ball over 26 times to Trine's 12. Nyemade Cooper led Kalamazoo with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Carmen Dorris scored 13 points with six rebounds and four assists. Courtney Kaplan fouled out with 12 points and five assists. Kalamazoo travels to Olivet on Saturday for a 3 p.m. start.
