DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has acquired righthanded pitcher Edwin Jackson from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for outfielder Matt Joyce.
Jackson posted a 14-11 record and 4.42 ERA (183.1IP/90ER) in 32 outings (31 starts) for the Rays during the 2008 season. He made three appearances in relief for the Rays during the post-season, compiling a 2.08 ERA (4.1IP/1ER) and five strikeouts.
“We are thrilled to add an established starter the caliber of Edwin Jackson to our club,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “Jackson is coming off a solid season with Rays and we feel he is a tremendous addition to our staff.”
Jackson has appeared in 106 games (77 starts) over six seasons at the major league level with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2003-05) and Tampa Bay Rays (2006-08) after being selected by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the June 2001 draft.
Joyce split the 2008 season between Detroit and Triple A Toledo. In 92 games with the Tigers, he hit .252 (61x242) with 16 doubles, 12 home runs and 33 RBI. Joyce batted .270 (54x200) with 13 doubles, 13 home runs and 41 RBI in 56 games for Toledo.
