KVCC gets tough road win

Defense wins basketball games. Particularly on nights when almost the entire team's shooting touch seemed to have been left in Kalamazoo.

The Lady Cougars built a nice little 17 point lead (47-30) with stifling defense in the second half - only to watch it dwindle to 3 points at 54-51 with 5:41 left on the strength of 5 consecutive long range bombs from the suddenly invigorated Lady Jets.

The Lady Cougars, after a rather emphatic timeout by Coach Welch, re-established the defense that had built the lead and out scored the home team 7-2 over the last 5 minutes to win it 61-53.

Ja'nee Morton's hot hand (11-15 from the floor and 6-7 from the FT line) led the Cougars on this night with 28 points and 8 rebounds and Mattawan's Nicole Compher added 11 hard earned points as they picked up an otherwise lethargic KVCC offense.

The 13th ranked Cougars move to 15-3 on the season and 9-1 in conference - which finds them alone at the top of the Western Conference of the MCCAA.

Next action is the Annual 'Suits and Sneakers" game on Saturday benefiting the Coaches versus Cancer effort. The oppostition will be provided by league foe Lansing CC and game time is 1:00 pm. Donations will be accepted in lieu of admission being charged and all proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society here in Kalamazoo.
