K-College men fall short


The men's basketball team fell 74-69 to visiting Trine on Saturday, Jan. 24. Kalamazoo opened up an early lead and led by as many as 13 (33-20) late in the first half. The Hornets took an eight-point lead (37-29) into halftime. Trine battled back in the second half and tied the score 56-56 with 7:42 left. The Thunder took their first lead of the game (59-56) on their next possession. Kalamazoo tied the score at 61-61, but the Thunder took over again and led the final five minutes of the game. After shooting just 36 percent in the first half, Trine shot 66.7 percent in the second half and finished at 50 percent. Kalamazoo shot 45.7 percent in the first half, but only 33.3 percent in the second half to finish at 39.7 percent. Trine was 19-of-27 at the free throw line while Kalamazoo made 8-of-14. Each team had 36 rebounds. Ben Jerome led Kalamazoo with 15 points and seven assists. Nate Orozco scored 13 points with six rebounds. Joe Prepolec came off the bench to score 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting with three blocked shots. Verelle Kirkwood added 12 points with four assists off the bench. Kalamazoo travels to Calvin on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. start.
