Who would have thought? As bad as the Detroit Lions organization has been over the last 50+ years, who would have thought they were capable of this. Even losing their first 15 of the season didn't quite set fans up for what happened Sunday in Green Bay.
It's not as if we are shocked by the loss. It's not even that we are upset by the loss. I think the first 0-16 season in the National Football League's history is simply more stunning than anything.
As I sit in awe of what just happened to the team we once argued was a player, a play, a moment from the Super Bowl in 1991, I can't help but think, how much worse can it get? Sure they lost every single game this season and you can't actually lose more than 16, but can it get worse?
Can the Lions lose all 4 pre-season games next season? Can they make it 0-20?
In the next few weeks we in the media and you the fan will discover exactly how frustrated owner William Clay Ford Sr. is. Any other owner would have fired his head coach 6 games into this catastrophe of a season, but not the Ford Family.
On the Titanic the ships band continued to play even as the ship went down around them. Mr. Marinelli...pass the tuba. Mr. Barry...dream bigger on that guitar, and of course Mr. Coletto...run the ball on 3rd and 11...it always catches them off guard.
It's not the Lions team that upset this writer this season. They were terrible, but they did keep playing. It's not their fault they lack any true professional athletic talent. It's not their fault they are being managed by a bunch of coaches who could only find a job in Detroit.
The ship sunk after a 31-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers Sunday. There is simply nothing left to save. Even pirates in the olden days tried to save their gold and silver as the ship was going down...I hate to tell you, but the franchise is losing it's gold by the second.
It may be all over for this franchise. In Detroit, in the NFL, in the football world. At this point the CFL isn't taking their meetings.
And why should they? Congratulations Detroit Lions organization as a whole...you are simply the worst franchise to ever attempt to construct a team. You failed on every level, you alienated your best player and traded Roy Williams. Now? You're left to pick up the scraps...you'll need a metal detector to find them.
Good luck.
