The Detroit Lions have fired Head Coach Rod Marinelli after losing 17 straight including an 0-16 mark this season. Former Assistant General Manager Martin Mayhew has been named General Manager while former COO Tom Lewand is now Detroit Lions team president.

Allen Park, Mich. - Detroit Lions Owner and Chairman William Clay Ford announced the following today:
The promotion of Tom Lewand to Team President.
The promotion of Martin Mayhew to General Manager.
Rod Marinelli has been relieved of his duties as Head Coach.
The following assistant coaches will not be retained: Joe Barry (Defensive Coordinator), Mike Barry (Assistant Offensive Line) and Jimmy Lake (Secondary). The contract of Joe Cullen (Defensive Line) will not be renewed.
The team also announced that Jim Colletto has been re-assigned to offensive line coach.
Additionally, Dave Boller (Assistant Director of Pro Personnel) will not be retained."
The firing ends the worst tenure in the history of the Detroit Lions as the 1st time coach finished losing 23-of-24 games in his final 2 seasons. The Lions have options with Bill Cowher, Brian Billick, Eric Mangini and several other coaching candidates on the market this season.
The Front Office however will remain mostly intact with the possible hiring of an Assistant General Manager according to owner William Clay Ford Sr.
