Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Amir McCleary scored 21 points to lead the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars to an 83-72 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos in the consolation game of the Charleston Classic.
Nikola Bundalo added 16 points for SIU-Edwardsville (1-2), which earned its first win over a Division I program. The Cougars had five double-digit scorers in the clash, as Barry Wellington (12), Aaron Garriott (11) and Mark Yelovich (10) contributed to the victory.
David Kool posted 27 points and six assists in the loss for Western Michigan (0-3). Flenard Whitfield tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Broncos, who got 11 points from Martelle McLemore.
SIU-Edwardsville led 38-35 at intermission after shooting 56 percent from the floor in the first half and nailing 9-of-10 free throws.
Over the final 20 minutes, the Cougars were an even more efficient 58.6 percent from the field.
Strong defense was key to the win for SIU-Edwardsville, as it held Western Michigan to 39 percent overall shooting.
