Phillies Claim World Series Title

(Philadelphia, PA) -- The Philadelphia Phillies captured their first World Series championship since 1980 by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-3, in Game Five at Citizens Bank Park.

The game was suspended due to rain on Monday in the sixth inning with the score tied 2-2, and inclement conditions on Tuesday forced Major League Baseball to postpone the contest until Wednesday evening.

Pedro Feliz singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning to help give the City of Brotherly Love its first major sports title of any kind since 1983. Jayson Werth went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Shane Victorino knocked in a pair of runs for the Phils, who won the best-of-seven set four-games-to-one.

J.C. Romero worked an inning-and-a-third of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Brad Lidge preserved the lead in the ninth earn the save and give Philadelphia only its second World Series title. Cole Hamels, who tossed six innings innings of five-hit, two-run ball in a no-decision, earned World Series MVP honors. Hamels went 4-and-0 in five starts during this year's postseason.

Rocco Baldelli hit a solo homer in the seventh, and Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena drove in a run apiece for the Rays, who were appearing in the Fall Classic, as well as the postseason, for the first time in franchise history. Tampa Bay starter Scott Kazmir allowed two runs in four-plus innings in a no-decision. J.P. Howell allowed the decisive run to suffer the loss.
