Harwell Out Of Tiger Stadium Conservancy

by Dan Cash

Legendary Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell has pulled out of the Tiger Stadium Conservancy Group. The group has until Tuesday to come up with just over 200,000 dollars to preserve a portion of the stadium.

Harwell’s attorney S. Gary Spicer says the 500,000 dollars raised by their foundation will be turned over to donors…because Harwell’s plan to keep the stadium a museum was taken off the table.

  1. This account is misleading. The Harwell Foundation had an alternative plan which was to keep the field, and build a new building on the site to house the Harwell Collection (which has been donated to the Detroit Public Library). It was contingent on the failure of the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy's plan to preserve the original Navin Field grandstand. Whether or not this was truly Ernie's intent is a very good question that only Ernie can answer.

The OTSC plan is still viable. For more information, see http://www.savetigerstadium.org
